chock
full o' sadness

During
the spring of this past year, (2002), I was on a mission to
place the "songs to kill yourself to" volumes
on CD. Between trying to keep the original music selection and
also deleting a few titles because of "space", (90
min. cassettes burned onto an 80 min. capacity cd), a few selections
were removed. As for the artwork, it was all kept the same and
tailored to size and fit for the cd format.
The ease of having these volumes available on cd made it easier
to push onto people to listen, also making it a "giveaway"
prize on this site during the spring, and a few copies here
and there that had been made for friends that were interested
enough to have a copy for themselves.
This section update now features covers for all cds in
their actual layout plus the text description I had placed in
the original section of this site. Enjoy.

songs
to kill yourself to... - vol.
I (party mix) |
|
I remember putting together two of these volumes together
back in the early '90's. So most of the music is either
from that time period or from the '80's. And of course,
completely appropriate. Music by the Pixies, the Cure,
Bauhaus, Love & Rockets, Peter Murphy, Joy Division and
a whole bunch of others. Good music to pop into your tape
deck in your car and just drive.
Now I have a confession to make. The
covers were not done on any of these until about 2-3 years
ago. I just never planned on it, but with the magic of
computers and a color printer, shazam !...covers. The
first cover here, came from a pastel drawing from '92.
Done purely as a study, but later used for an assignment
titled, "Obsession". The original drawing looked more
like a telephone pole and the cross image was a bit more
subliminal. Surprise, surprise, the insert contained a
self-portrait which was also at one point a pastel drawing.

II (just another party mix)
|
|
This cover for vol. II was also taken from a pastel drawing
done for an assignment on a story about a patient in a
mental hospital. It's really incredible how in the right
context, you can recycle your artwork. In any case, vol.
II was also "chock full 'o sadness", with pretty much
the same tone of music. However, can you actually believe
I threw a Billy Joel tune on this ?!! uggghh!! I think
the song actually reminded me of someone, in which case,
I had no choice but to include it on here. You can also
see in the insert that I was also clueless for an association
of a background to what the cover was as far as mental
hospitals. Luckily, I found this photograph of some pills.

III (yet another party mix)
|
|
Volume III came about when a friend had made a tape for
me of some music that they listened to. Well, in return
I made a tape of some of the stuff I was listening to
at the time. It was '98 and some of the tunes that made
it aside from the usual Bauhaus, the Cure and Joy Division
were Concrete Blonde, Heather Nova, Tom Waits, Squirrel
Nut Zippers, R.E.M., Portishead, Mazzy Star, Radiohead
and a few others. Since I was also giving it as a present,
I was forced to make a cover and so vol. III even though
the last of these party mixes, actually became the first
cover completed of all three. It also had a perfect insert
with some razor blades and a pair of rosary beads. As
far as the cover, it came from a ink/marker drawing from
my story, "nothing there". |

I
have to say, after listening to these more and more on cds,
they truly are a great collection with the variety of music
on here.
Of course, just like the clocks, I could "perhaps"
make these available for sale for those interested enough that
they'd want a copy of it for themselves. I would however be
selling you the artwork really, (the music could just be a nice
bonus). hmmmm... something to think about... |
